With Mercedes gradually working out their problems and bringing performance to the W13, it was Russell who took the squad’s standout results – storming to a maiden F1 pole position at the Hungaroring and beating team mate Lewis Hamilton to a first-ever Grand Prix win at Interlagos.
There were also some noteworthy on-track battles, such as wheel-to-wheel encounters with world champion Max Verstappen in Spain and en route to victory in Brazil, and a high-speed skirmish with Charles Leclerc in Belgium.
