WATCH: Onboard with Gasly as he suffers heavy testing crash
For the second straight day of pre-season testing in Barcelona, running was stopped because of a big accident - Pierre Gasly doing considerable damage to his new Red Bull RB15 car after crashing into the barriers.
The incident - which was the Frenchman's second off of the winter, the 23-year-old having spun into the barriers at Turn 13 on his first day of running in the RB15 - occurred at the high-speed Turn 9, and follows Sebastian Vettel's sizeable accident on Wednesday.
As with Vettel, Gasly, who left the track midway through Day 3 of Test 2, hit the barriers with enough force to necessitate a trip the medical centre. Images from the crash showed a mechanic carrying away the car’s front wing, while the rear of the car looked to have suffered significant damage as well.
It’s not the start to his Red Bull Racing career that Gasly would have wanted, after the Frenchman was promoted from Toro Rosso to the seat vacated for 2019 by Daniel Ricciardo.
His team will now need to assess the damage to his Honda-powered machine, but given the time of the accident it's unlikely Red Bull will return to the track until the final day of pre-season running on Friday, when Max Verstappen is scheduled to be in the car.
