George Russell produced a stunning final lap in qualifying in Budapest, to take his first pole position in Formula 1 at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell was the final driver to cross the line in Q3, with the Mercedes driver producing a phenomenal time of 1m 17.377s to beat Carlos Sainz, who had looked on course for his second pole position of the season for much of Q3, by 0.044s. Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three, finishing 0.190s off Russell’s time.

Lando Norris will start alongside Leclerc on the second row, with a time good enough for fourth fastest on the grid, ahead of the Alpine’s of Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso in fifth and sixth respectively.

It was a not a good final run for Lewis Hamilton in the other Mercedes, who struggled with a DRS issue and was forced to abandon his lap, leaving him starting down in seventh.

Valtteri Bottas will start in eighth, ahead of the other McLaren of Daniel Ricciardo in ninth, while Max Verstappen starts in 10th – after his final run was curtailed by a loss of power – with his team mate Sergio Perez in 11th, after being knocked out in Q2.
