‘I’m very proud’ – Emotional Jos Verstappen heaps praise on son Max after latest F1 title win
Jos Verstappen expressed his pride and emotion as he reacted to son Max securing a third successive F1 championship title over the Qatar Grand Prix weekend, praising him for being “so dominant” all year long.
Verstappen was confirmed as the 2023 title winner with a second-place finish in the Sprint at the Lusail International Circuit, before continuing his celebrations with a 14th victory from 17 races in the main event on Sunday evening.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the title was sealed, Verstappen senior, himself a former F1 racer, commented: “It’s the way he did it. He was so dominant this year and he delivered really well. I’m very proud of that.”
Jos, who played a key role in Max’s junior career and journey through the motorsport ranks, was asked if he always knew his son would go on to achieve such success.
“I knew it a long time [ago] when he was in go-karts,” he said. “I think we made the right decisions in the beginning of his career and I must say now it’s up to him what he does.
“I’m just very happy how he does it, how strong he is and the way he works for that [success]. The credit is definitely for Max.”
With Verstappen joining an elite club of three-time world champions, the question on many people’s lips is how many the 26-year-old can rack up during his time in F1.
“We will see, we don’t know yet,” added Jos, with Max’s Red Bull contract set to run through the 2028 season. “This is a good thing, we have to enjoy it, then we’ll see.”
Verstappen has vowed not to ease off over the remaining five races of the season as he pushes to beat his 2022 record of 15 race wins in a single campaign and add another achievement to a remarkable year.
