A red flag late in the 2023 Australian Grand Prix led to a race restart that saw Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Nyck de Vries, and Logan Sargeant crash out – while Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso also made contact...
Max Verstappen led Lewis Hamilton away in the late restart that was triggered after red flags were flown for Kevin Magnussen's Lap 54 crash. Behind the race leaders, however, Sainz tapped compatriot Alonso into a spin in a late dash for the podium.
The Alpines came together just after Alonso was spun to the rear of the field, with Gasly and Ocon ending up in the barriers amid a sea of debris. Further back, AlphaTauri's De Vries and Williams' Logan Sargeant ended up in the gravel after Sargeant appeared to outbrake himself.
Another red flag was duly flown, with the race paused on Lap 58 of 58 – officials later deciding to effectively call the race result, resuming proceedings behind the Safety Car for the final lap in the order in which they started the previous race restart, minus the cars that crashed out at that restart.
