The Thai driver went off the track and into the gravel at high speed on the seventh lap of the race, at which point George Russell was in the lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen – but thankfully, Albon walked away and his Williams wasn't collected by any other car as it rebounded back onto the track.

"Yes, it’s all fine, all fine," Albon said after walking away from his stricken Williams. "More disappointed and sorry for the team than anything else. We had a great car today. I think even in the first few laps of the race we were strong. I was really happy with the car – it was just very unfortunate.

Unfortunately for himself and Williams, having started P8, Albon was running in a promising sixth place at the time, the team having scored a solitary point so far this season. Russell might also have felt hard done by as he pitted just before a red flag was flown.

After debris and gravel poured onto the racing line, the red flag was brought out quickly after the accident, pausing the race on Lap 9 of 58.
