The F1 circus was back after the summer break, with Max Verstappen picking up where he left off with a scintillating drive from 14th on the grid to victory. But while he was carving his way through the field, all sorts of chaos was emerging behind – which led to some very interesting radio messages.
Carlos Sainz enjoyed exploring the new track limits in practice, dipping a wheel into the gravel rally-style, while his team mate Charles Leclerc had the biggest moment on Saturday when he spun into the barriers.
The race start was frantic, with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso clashing. The Spaniard had a brutal assessment of his rival’s manoeuvre – although he did soften his words post-race after Hamilton’s apology.
Leclerc was struggling to keep a handle on his team’s strategy, Schumacher was struggling to keep his backside from burning, while Alex Albon was celebrating “the best race I’ve ever done” as he claimed the final point on offer.
