WATCH: Hamilton re-lives his incredible GP2 breakthrough drive at Turkey 2006
Turkey’s Istanbul Park is where Lewis Hamilton’s journey to becoming a seven-time Formula 1 champion ended. But in a way, it’s where it began too, with the circuit the backdrop for a coming-of-age drive for Hamilton in GP2 back in 2006 that has since become the stuff of legend.
Under pressure in the drivers’ championship at that point of the season from rival Nelson Piquet Junior, Hamilton’s performance in the Turkish Sprint Race was otherworldly, as he spun to near the back of the pack, only to go on a rampage through the field that saw him climb from P19 to finish second at the flag.
Formula 1 Digital Presenter Will Buxton was working for the GP2 series at the time of Hamilton’s mesmeric performance, and ahead of Hamilton claiming his 2020 crown, the pair sat down to re-live the best moments from one of the most revered junior performances in motorsport history.
