BEYOND THE GRID: Andy Cowell on Aston Martin’s title ambitions, Newey’s arrival and F1’s future

Andy Cowell added the role of Aston Martin Team Principal to his existing CEO title ahead of the 2025 season – the former Mercedes engine guru tasked with overseeing the squad’s planned rise to the very top of the Formula 1 pecking order.
On the latest episode of the Beyond The Grid podcast, Cowell tells host Tom Clarkson how the team are doing everything in their power to achieve that success, underlined by huge investment and key hires over the last few years.
With an ambitious owner in Lawrence Stroll, a new state-of-the-art factory at Silverstone, a multiple champion in Fernando Alonso, the arrival of legendary designer Adrian Newey and an impending Honda partnership, all the ingredients appear to be coming together.
In a wide-ranging conversation, Cowell explains how his current job compares to his time at Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, where he led the development of engines that won multiple Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships between 2014 and 2021.
He also looks forward to F1’s new era of racing with sustainable fuel from the 2026 season, and shares more details about Aston Martin’s switch to Honda power next year – which he hopes will give the team an advantage.
