F2: Maini inherits Budapest Sprint Race victory after Verschoor’s disqualification

Richard Verschoor has been disqualified from the Budapest Sprint Race for a technical infringement handing the victory to Invicta Racing’s Kush Maini.
Starting on pole, the Trident driver made a fine start but having chosen to run the Hard tyres, he lost out to PREMA Racing’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who opted for the Softs, early on.

Verschoor then bided his time behind the Mercedes prospect, waiting for his softer compound to drop off, before overtaking Antonelli for the lead on Lap 16 of 28.
He was still under pressure from Invicta’s Maini, but he held off the Alpine Academy member before pulling out a two-second gap on his way across the line in P1.
However, following a post-race inspection of his #22 Trident car, it was found that the plank fitted to Verschoor’s car was below the minimum thickness required, therefore breaching Article 3.4.3 of the Technical Regulations, and causing him to be disqualified.
As a result, Maini inherits the victory, while his fellow Alpine Academy junior Victor Martins finishes second for ART Grand Prix, with Championship leader Isack Hadjar moving up to third for Campos Racing.
This also means MP Motorsport pair Dennis Hauger and Franco Colapinto move up to fourth and fifth respectively, as Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Paul Aron takes P6.
AIX Racing’s Taylor Barnard produced a great fightback drive through the field after starting in P17 and the Briton now finishes seventh ahead of DAMS Lucas Oil driver Juan Manuel Correa, who takes the last point in P8.

Antonelli on the other hand was not able to keep his tyres alive and with the Softs having dropped of heavily PREMA chose to pit the Italian driver for the Hards although he fought valiantly from the back of the field to finish P15.
The drivers will now look over the data before returning tomorrow morning for the Budapest Feature Race, which is set to start at 10:05 local time.
