F3: Marti secures his maiden pole in style in Barcelona flyer

Josep Maria Marti got the job done on home turf, as the Campos Racing driver claimed his first Formula 3 pole position in style. Several drivers were in contention for the top spot, but two consecutive personal bests saw the Spanish racer beat Taylor Barnard and Williams junior Franco Colapinto by over two tenths.
Eager to get a lap in with dark clouds ominously overhead, Mercedes junior Paul Aron took charge early on before Marti went fastest of all on his second set of hard tyres.

A third flying run saw him improve to a 1:27.587 with two minutes to go, but with the tyres past their best, nobody could put together another attempt to deny him pole at his, and his team’s, home event.
After topping Practice, Barnard achieved his best-ever Qualifying result for Jenzer Motorsport ahead of Colapinto. PREMA Racing locked out the Feature Race top five, with Ferrari junior Dino Beganovic going quicker than Aron.
Championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto had to settle for sixth, just in front of Red Bull junior Sebastian Montoya, Mari Boya and Leonardo Fornaroli.
Gregoire Saucy rounded out the top 10 for ART Grand Prix, outqualifying Williams juniors Luke Browning and Zak O’Sullivan. The latter lines up on reverse grid pole for Saturday’s Sprint Race at 10:30 local time.
