Behind Hamilton, Max Verstappen once again appeared to have extracted the maximum possible from his Red Bull RB16 car from third on the grid as he leapfrogged Valtteri Bottas - who started ahead of him - to take second place.
Further down the field there was trouble for Charles Leclerc who was forced out of the race with an electrical problem, while the Racing Points had another good race, with Lance Stroll fourth ahead of Sergio Perez.
