Italian Grand Prix: Race Facts and Stats
Charles Leclerc defeated the Mercedes duo en-route to securing Ferrari’s first win on home soil since 2010. The Scuderia also took their 19th Monza win, extending the record for the most victories by any constructor at a single F1 circuit. Here are some other notable facts and statistics from a competitive Italian Grand Prix.
-
Leclerc saw off the fast-charging Valtteri Bottas to grab his second victory just a week after his maiden win in Belgium. He joins greats such as Bruce McLaren, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen and rival Lewis Hamilton to win their first races in the series at back-to-back Grands Prix.
-
With Hamilton and Leclerc battling for the lead, Bottas was able to close in on a fresh set of the medium compound tyres. As Hamilton dropped away, Bottas was best placed but was unable to capitalise. The Finn has now finished on the Monza podium for a third year in a row but has yet to grace the top step.
-
Monza is a happy hunting ground for Lewis Hamilton, who has taken the win here in four of the past six races. But he has finished on the podium in each of those, adding an eighth career top 3 at the Italian Grand Prix this time around. Interestingly, this is the first time the reigning champion has been third.
-
Renault topped the midfield after a stunning weekend which saw the team secure their first double top-five finish since the 2008 Japanese Grand Prix, 210 races ago. Before the race, Daniel Ricciardo had only scored once in his last seven races after a dismal run. The Australian bounced back in fine style with him and Nico Hulkenberg equalling their best results at this circuit.
-
Alexander Albon has made a lightning start to life at Red Bull with two top-six finishes. The Thai driver suffered an early setback after contact with Carlos Sainz forced him off the track and through the gravel trap, but the rookie settled down and worked his way back through the field to P6. Incidentally, he has also beaten team mate Max Verstappen in 100 percent of his Red Bull races so far after the Dutchman could only work his way back to eighth after starting from the back of the grid.
-
Racing Point’s afternoon started in dramatic fashion after Lance Stroll was knocked off by Sebastian Vettel early on. But team mate Sergio Perez had a strong race en-route to P7 and a strong haul of points. The Mexican has finished ninth or better in his last six Italian Grands Prix.
-
The tifosi may be bonkers for the scarlet red Ferraris, but there was also plenty of support for home talent Antonio Giovanazzi who secured his best career finish in ninth for Alfa Romeo to take two championship points.
-
Lando Norris rounded out the top 10 after recovering from a poor qualifying to pick up his sixth points-scoring finish of the season. Despite strong performances, he still sits behind team mate Carlos Sainz in the drivers’ standings.
