Max Verstappen has said he is “definitely” still keen on contesting the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the future, with the Dutchman also revealing that Fernando Alonso is interested in being one of his team mates.

Verstappen, who is contracted to race in F1 with Red Bull for at least the next five seasons, has previously spoken of his desire to tackle the famous race, which his father Jos triumphed in as an LMP2 class driver back in 2008.

In an appearance at the recent Honda Racing Thanks Day, where a range of single-seaters, sportscars and bikes were in action, Verstappen was asked about the chances of him one day competing outside F1.

“Le Mans I definitely would like to do,” he made clear. “I’ve been there already when my dad used to race and the atmosphere is amazing. It’s endurance, so many people, driving through the night, sunrise – I think it’s really cool.”

Asked what his ‘dream team’ would be for the event, Verstappen namechecked fellow F1 driver Alonso, who won Le Mans outright with Toyota in 2018 and 2019, saying: “I’ve been speaking to Fernando about it. He said he would only want to do it with me again. That would be really cool.

“The only thing is that for Le Mans there is not really a minimum weight for the driver. I’m quite a heavy driver, so I need to find light team mates to compensate. Fernando is quite light, so it would be quite good, but then we need to find another one – I need to have a look!”

Verstappen also took a moment to discuss other motorsport categories that he enjoys watching – and some of the machines he has been able to test in recent years.

“For sure, I would like to try a MotoGP bike,” he commented. “I enjoy the Super GT and I got to try one, which was very nice. The Super Formula car, they’re very nice, and it’s the fastest car below F1, so they look great.”

Whether he would be tempted to try IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500, the latter being the final piece of the ‘Triple Crown’ alongside winning at Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen added: “I like to watch it. I’ve a lot of respect for what they do, but I don’t think I’m participating.”

Back in F1 circles, Verstappen is gearing up for yet another title defence in 2024 as he looks to make it four drivers’ championships on the bounce.
