Reigning champion Max Verstappen enjoyed a superior start to Ferrari's poleman Sainz and wrestled the lead away into Turn 1. It was there that Sainz was tapped into a spin by Mercedes' George Russell, who then lost a place to Aston Martin's P5 starter Lance Stroll.

Sainz ended up limping back to the pits to retire his car and Russell was slapped with a five-second penalty as Verstappen led Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton away.
