70 years of innovation: how F1 came together for Project Pitlane
Just over 70 years ago, the first Formula 1 race took place at Silverstone in the United Kingdom. The seven decades since have defined Formula 1 and made it what it is today, a global spectacle, rich in history, brimming with legends and with over half a billion fans around the globe.
But just as it was preparing to celebrate this rather special birthday, Formula 1 – along with the rest of the world – has been faced with the biggest global challenge in living memory in the form of the COVID-19 crisis.

In response, Formula 1 has put old rivalries aside in the battle against the virus, doing what the people of F1 do best; adapt, innovate and deliver, as shown through Project Pitlane and other important initiatives to support health services and victims of COVID-19.
With contributions from all 10 team principals, drivers, Jean Todt, Chase Carey and Ross Brawn, the special video above takes us behind the scenes of Project Pitlane, reflecting on the here and now, as well as looking back on the past seven decades of F1 – and ahead to the positive future for the sport.
