Figures from Formula 1 have sent their warmest wishes to MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi, after the nine-time champion announced on Thursday that he would be calling time on his 26-year career at the end of this season.

Affectionally and famously nicknamed The Doctor, Rossi was yesterday dubbed the "Michael Jordan of motorbikes" by reigning MotoGP champion Joan Mir with plaudits coming in from across the world.

He won't hang up his helmet just yet, however, as reports have emerged that the Italian may pursue car racing next season having swapped rides with Lewis Hamilton and tested for Ferrari too. Read on to see how the F1 world, including F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari, and Mercedes, has reacted.

While Daniel Ricciardo posted on Instagram: "Where does one begin.. The joy, happiness, excitement you brought to so many TV’s and race tracks around the world may never ever be matched or at least not in my lifetime. I wish you the happiest of retirements but we all know that doesn’t mean a life without 2 wheels.

"Long may your passion continue. I’ll be waiting at your ranch when the seasons over. On behalf of pretty much the whole world, grazie! You’re a [*******] legend mate…"

And Williams driver George Russell posted on his Instagram Story: "Forever a legend, Grande Vale!"
