F2: Doohan wins Feature Race at Spa ahead of Drugovich

Jack Doohan went one better than he managed in the Sprint Race to take victory in the Formula 2 Feature event from fourth on the grid. The Virtuosi Racing driver capitalised on a well-executed undercut on championship leader Felipe Drugovich to take the lead and hold onto it to the end.

Drugovich’s afternoon was positive, securing another podium finish in what has been a stellar season for the Brazilian. His finishing position was also boosted by closest rival for the title Théo Pourchaire falling to an issue that resulted in a DNF.

Liam Lawson also secured a second podium of the weekend, rounding out the top three finishers for Carlin after a long battle with Charouz Racing System’s Enzo Fittipaldi.

Doohan climbed up to second immediately from lights out and set about chasing Drugovich in the opening stint. Lawson was battling with Fittipaldi and the duo went wheel-to-wheel over several laps at Les Combes. The Red Bull reserve driver thought he had the move done on several occasions but a cut across the run-off area kept Fittipaldi ahead until Lap 7, when Lawson made a move stick heading into Malmedy.

Richard Verschoor’s decision to run the alternate strategy, going from mediums onto soft tyres, promoted him up the order. The Trident driver climbed up to fourth place by the end, carving his way through the points-paying positions but a podium was just out of reach by the time he cleared the traffic.

The result means that Drugovich’s championship lead is back up to a healthy 43 points over Theo Pourchaire. Williams Academy driver Logan Sargeant remains in third after finishing sixth, while Doohan’s victory lifts him up to fourth in the standings ahead of Lawson, now on 121 and 114 points respectively.
