“My thinking is around racing.” When Robert Kubica made the decision to leave Williams at the end of the season, it was unclear what he would do next. His focus since has been on securing a racing programme – most likely outside F1 – before deciding if he can fit a Formula 1 development role alongside his day job…

Haas and Racing Point are believed to be interested in taking the Pole on in a development role, focusing on simulator work and utilising his immense experience. Kubica will consider such a position, but it depends on what else he ends up doing.

“We are moving forward [with plans], but no decision yet, so we will see what the next weeks will bring and what the outcome will be,” he said.

“[A development role] might be [of interest], but not necessarily. A lot depends on the opportunities and what I will be doing as a main thing next year, and once it’s sorted then I will see if I can work on something else or not.”

Is he confident of racing somewhere next year? “Let’s put it in this way: if I will not be racing somewhere it will be my decision,” he replied. “I’m pretty confident that if I want to race I will be racing.”

The one-time Grand Prix race winner added: “My thinking is around racing, and while this is not be sorted out I will not think about something else. I’m pretty confident it’s a question of time to get to the conclusion and then we will see.”

DTM, otherwise known as the German Touring Car Championship, is one potential destination for Kubica if he wants a strong racing programme, but it is believed no serious conversations have taken place.

For now, his focus is on his last five Grands Prix with Williams and to see if he can extend his tally of a single point, even if it seems unlikely given the current competitiveness of his FW42.
