WATCH: George Russell charts his journey from karts to F1 in this intimate look at his rookie season
George Russell was one of three F1 rookies last season. But while fellow debutant Lando Norris was surfing the wave of a resurgent McLaren team's performance, and Alex Albon was getting promoted from Toro Rosso to the front-running Red Bull squad, Russell endured a torturous year at the wheel of the solitary point-scoring Williams FW42.
Russell’s job was made all the harder by internal issues at Williams, which saw the team miss the first two days of pre-season testing, while neither Russell nor team mate Robert Kubica were once able to make it out of the first part of qualifying.

Yet despite all that, Russell’s performances in 2019 drew almost universal praise from the F1 cognoscenti, who couldn’t help but admire the way the 21-year-old shrugged off the season’s disappointments, nor his performances versus Kubica, whom he outqualified 21-0 across the year.
In this intimate look at his maiden season, watch in the video above as Russell charts his journey from kart star to F1 driver, with insight from his inner circle at Williams.
