Albon to race in DTM in 2021 alongside Red Bull reserve role

Following the news that he would concede his Red Bull seat to Sergio Perez for 2021, it’s been revealed that Alex Albon will race in the DTM, Germany’s prestigious touring car championship, for selected rounds this season.

Albon is set to partner with New Zealand racer Liam Lawson – who finished last year’s Formula 3 championship in fifth place – in a Red Bull-backed effort in the DTM, with a third driver to take Albon’s place when the Thai driver is called up to perform his reserve driver roles at Red Bull this season.

It comes off the back of Albon losing his seat at Red Bull to former Racing Point driver Perez, after Albon finished a disappointing seventh in the drivers’ standings in 2020, beaten by the likes of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz, as well as Perez himself – although Albon did at least record his first two podiums in the sport last season.

“The DTM, with a high-class field and GT3 sports cars, is an interesting platform and a real challenge, both for successful race drivers like Alex Albon as for our Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson,” Red Bull’s motorsports adviser Dr Helmut Marko told the DTM’s official website.

It’s yet to be confirmed which team and car make Albon and Lawson will contest the 2021 DTM series with, or how many rounds Albon will compete in.
