WATCH IN FULL: Red Bull’s amazing repair job on Verstappen’s car on the grid in Hungary
Max Verstappen drove a superb race on Sunday to split the Mercedes and come home P2 after starting down in seventh on the grid – but he almost didn't make the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix at all.
After sliding on the wet track as he made his way to his grid slot before the race, he crashed into the barriers at Turn 12, ripping off his front wing and damaging the suspension on his RB16.
“[Max] was going to come into the pits because he thought it was all over,” Red Bull boss Christian Horner revealed after the race. Instead, he managed to limp around to his grid slot, where his mechanics swarmed around the car and attempted to repair it with less than 20 minutes to go until lights out.
Amazingly, they pulled it off – with just 25 seconds to spare, according to Horner – and Verstappen dedicated the result to his crew after the race.
