WATCH: Go onboard for Hamilton’s thrilling P1 qualifying lap around Silverstone
Nigel Mansell always used to credit the Silverstone crowd’s energy for giving him an extra couple of tenths in qualifying, and Lewis Hamilton was most definitely channelling the good vibes of his British fans, after the seven-time champion put in a storming run to set the fastest time in qualifying at the British Grand Prix weekend.
Having spent the morning in Mercedes’ simulator due to the revised format this weekend – with Friday featuring just one practice session ahead of qualifying, which sets the grid for Saturday’s F1 Sprint – Hamilton got his Mercedes W12 beautifully hooked up around the 3.6-mile circuit in qualifying, setting provisional P1 in Q3 with the run you see in the video above.

His second lap might have been even faster, had Hamilton not made a mistake in Vale, with his eventual margin over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen just 0.075s – with the two title rivals now set to duel it out from the front row in Saturday's 100km F1 Sprint debut.
