Honda to power Red Bull and Toro Rosso in 2021

Red Bull and Toro Rosso will enter Formula 1’s exciting new regulation era in 2021 powered by Honda, after both teams confirmed they have extended their contracts with the Japanese power unit manufacturer.

Toro Rosso were the first of the two Red Bull-owned teams to make the switch to Honda power back in 2018, before the senior team followed suit in 2019, signing a two-year deal up to the end of 2020.

But off the back of a 2019 season that’s netted three wins and five additional podiums so far for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen – not to mention a podium each for Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly – both teams have agreed with Honda to stick together in 2021, when Formula 1’s regulations undergo arguably their largest ever single overhaul.

Honda had been weighing up whether or not to stay in Formula 1 beyond 2020 and were keen to see the draft of the 2021 regulations before making a final call. It remains unclear if they will stay in F1 for the long-term, but the news does confirm they will be around for at least one more season beyond next year.

Meanwhile, last time out in Brazil, Verstappen’s victory and Gasly’s second place marked the first time that Honda-powered cars had enjoyed a one-two finish in a race since 1991, when Gerhard Berger led home Ayrton Senna at the Japanese Grand Prix.
